At the top of a lush green hill, with breathtaking views, lies the traditional house in Paleopoli. It is a small stone house, built using the volto (vaulted) technique with local porous stones, dating back to the 19th century. The restoration of the house was carried out with care and respect for Kythiran architecture, to offer authentic hospitality to its visitors.
The veranda of the Kamara is a natural balcony with endless views of the Cretan Sea, Antikythira, and the White Mountains of Crete. It is surrounded by the Porfyrousa estate, where the vineyards and olive groves create an idyllic environment that highlights the magic of nature.
Nestled in the ancient landscape of Palaiopoli, near the mythical Baths of Aphrodite and overlooking Avlemonas, Crete, and Antikythera, lies the Porfyrousa Estate — a place deeply connected with nature, history, and the traditions of Kythera.
Among old olive groves, organic vines, ancient caves and small stone towersAmid old olive groves, organic vineyards, ancient caves, and small stone-built towers stands the estate’s farmhouse, with its terrace gazing over the deep blue sea and the island’s vibrant greenery. The scents of sage, thyme, local oregano, and capers blend with the sea breeze and the colors of the land, offering a truly unique sensory experience. aromas of sage, thyme, oregano and capers, mixed with the sea breeze and the colours of the field, giving a unique sensory experience.
The estate is not just a place for staying or cultivating — it is a place of memory and viticultural expression. Here, traditional organic wines are crafted from grape varieties born or deeply rooted in the soils of Kythera.
Arikaras The estate’s signature grape. An ancient red variety from Phocaea in Ionia, known for its deep color, rich aroma, and noble astringency that mellows beautifully with age. It gives birth to the iconic Brusco of Porfyrousa — a full-bodied wine with an authentic island character.
Kydonitsa A blonde, aromatic Kytherian variety. The name comes from the aroma of quince that bursts as soon as you cut the grape. It produces expressive, slightly perfumed wines with an elegant, delicate character.
Petrolanos: An old local white variety, with a distinctive aroma and a soft, sweet aftertaste as it ages. A wine that loves silence and time.
Malvazias: Famous in the Mediterranean world, with roots in Kythera and Monemvasia. Its aroma is sweet, exuberant - reminiscent of the erotic wines of the Venetians and the notorious «Cerigo Muscat» of the Doges.
Assyrtiko: A variety of Greek islands that works perfectly with Kydonitsa, bringing freshness and minerality.
Roditis: The «master of balance». Incorporated in many of the estate's wines, giving structure and aromatic delicacy.
Ntokoumaki: An extremely rare and precious orange wine from an old white-fleshed black variety. Smooth, aromatic, light - like a poem in a glass.
The Porphyrousa estate does not only produce wine. They are also cultivated:
Olives Athinolies, perennial Coroneikes and newer Thrusters, for the production of organic olive oil with a rich body and strong character.
Aromatic plants of the island such as sage, turmeric, oregano, capers and salty lily, which give gastronomic depth to the products and the landscape.
Tsipouro and seasonal flavours, all made with respect to nature and seasonality.
Our love for nature and quality is reflected in the organic products that we cultivate with passion in our family farms in Paleopolis and Pourko.
In addition, we produce certified organic products such as olives, red wine vinegar, sage, thyme, oregano and jams with fruits from our organic garden, which we also use in our kitchen.
Our products are available in the wine restaurant and also to order.
